Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion in NJ

PLIF Surgery in New Jersey

Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (PLIF) is a surgical procedure our NJ spine surgeons use to treat chronic back and leg pain caused by damaged discs or spinal instability in the lower back. This minimally invasive spine surgery is performed through the back, allowing the surgeon to remove the affected disc and insert a bone graft or special spacer between the vertebrae. Over time, the vertebrae naturally fuse, stabilizing the spine and relieving nerve pressure for lasting pain relief and better mobility.

How is PLIF Surgery Performed?

PLIF surgery is performed with the patient lying face down under general anesthesia. One of our spine surgeons makes an incision along the middle of the lower back to reach the affected vertebrae. Muscles are carefully moved aside to expose the spine. The damaged disc is removed, and an interbody spacer filled with bone graft is inserted into the empty disc space. Screws and rods are then placed on either side of the vertebrae to secure and stabilize the spine while fusion occurs.

PLIF Surgery Recovery

Recovery after PLIF surgery varies by individual but generally takes several weeks to months. Most patients spend 1 to 3 days in the hospital and begin walking shortly after surgery to promote healing. Pain and soreness are common but improve with time. Physical therapy typically starts within weeks to rebuild strength and mobility. While many return to light activities within 4 to 6 weeks, complete recovery and fusion can take up to a year. Close follow-up with your spine surgeon ensures proper healing and a safe return to everyday life.
