Due to the frequent arm movement that occurs during work, sports, and hobbies, elbow pain is a common condition affecting people of all ages and lifestyles. Injury may also be caused by arthritis, although your elbow will not wear the same way as your spine, knee, or hip.

Causes of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is often the result of overuse, such as repetitive motion during sports, occupational activities or everyday tasks.

Common conditions of elbow pain include:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Tendinitis
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Throwing injuries
  • Dislocations

Symptoms of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can be mild or severe and have symptoms that include:

  • Weak grip
  • Stiffness
  • Tenderness on the outside of the elbow
  • Pain when lifting objects
  • Numbness or tingling

Treatments for Elbow Pain

Treatment can vary depending on the severity of the injury. When treating an elbow injury, your doctor will examine the joint, gather your medical history, and recommend tests to develop the best treatment plan for you.

For mild elbow pain, at-home treatments may provide relief. These treatments include:

  • Avoiding activities that aggravate the elbow
  • Applying ice to the elbow for 15-20 minutes 2 to 3 times a day
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Supporting the elbow with an elbow pad

For more severe or chronic elbow pain, aspiration (extracting fluid from the elbow), or steroid injections may help reduce inflammation and provide relief.
