Meet Dr. Khatri - Spine Surgeon in NJ

Vishal Khatri, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon in New Jersey, specializing in spine surgery at our orthopedic clinics in Bloomfield and East Brunswick. Dr. Khatri has a deep commitment to helping patients overcome their back pain and return to doing what they love. He began his career at Cooper Bone & Joint Institute, part of Cooper University Hospital, the only Level 1 academic trauma center in South Jersey and a partner of MD Anderson Cancer Center. Working in such a high-level environment provided Dr. Khatri with hands-on experience in a wide variety of spine conditions, ranging from straightforward cases to the most complex.

He has a special interest in treating degenerative spine conditions, performing minimally invasive spine surgery, helping athletes recover from spinal injuries, and managing spinal tumors and trauma. He also focuses on Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways, which aim to speed up healing and reduce downtime after surgery.

Dr. Khatri’s academic path reflects his dedication and drive. He studied Biomedical Engineering at The George Washington University, where he graduated summa cum laude and served as valedictorian. He stayed on at GW for medical school, then completed a general surgery internship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. He continued his orthopedic surgery training at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, eventually becoming chief resident. To further his education, he completed a spine surgery fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the world-renowned R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

He has also published numerous research articles and co-authored book chapters on spinal conditions, and is an active member of the AO Spine, the North American Spine Society, the Scoliosis Research Society, the Philadelphia Orthopedic Society, and the New Jersey Orthopedic Society.

Dr. Khatri is recognized not only for his exceptional surgical skills but also for his warm, patient-centered approach to spine care throughout New Jersey. He takes the time to understand each person’s unique situation and is deeply committed to providing the same level of care and compassion he’d want for his own family. Whether he’s helping an athlete get back on the field or guiding someone through recovery from a complex spinal condition, his focus is always on doing what’s best for the patient.

When he’s not in the operating room, Dr. Khatri enjoys spending quality time with his wife and their three energetic boys, often exploring the outdoors, coaching sports, or just enjoying the chaos and joy of family life.

Quote from Dr. Khatri:

“I believe in a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive approach to spine care. I work very closely with internists, anesthesiologists, neurologists, radiologists, physiatrists, therapists, and pediatricians to ensure the best patient care. All avenues for alternatives to surgery are explored before surgery is considered. No two patients are the same, so I focus on an individualized, patient-centric treatment plan. If surgery is necessary, I use the most effective and safe techniques that allow for an optimal recovery. In spine surgery, less is more. Minimally invasive techniques allow for rapid pain relief and a swift recovery.”
