Dr. Joseph Legato is an esteemed member of Alliance Orthopedics’ Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team, specializing in the intricate treatment of the hand, wrist, and elbow. With a deep commitment to enhancing patient care, Dr. Legato has cultivated a particular expertise in managing peripheral nerve injuries and excels in the precision of microsurgery.
A pioneer in innovative surgical techniques, Dr. Legato is proficient in Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) surgery, offering patients a less invasive option for hand and wrist procedures. He is also adept in performing minimally invasive treatments, including endoscopic carpal tunnel release, wrist arthroscopy, and collagenase injections for Dupuytrenβs contracture.
Dr. Legato’s approach to care is rooted in a genuine understanding of how musculoskeletal disorders impact his patients’ lives. He values the importance of personalized treatment, considering the crucial role of the hand and upper extremity in everyday function. His greatest reward comes from improving his patients’ quality of life through tailored medical solutions.
Before embarking on his medical career, Dr. Legato worked as an engineer, a role that significantly influences his approach to orthopedic surgery. His fascination with the complexities of the hand, wrist, and elbow, along with their intricate interplay with human anatomy, has driven his passion for this specialized field. “As a physician, I strive to be a scientist, engineer, and teacher all at once. I embrace these roles and enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems while caring for the patient as a whole person,” says Dr. Legato.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Legato enjoys spending quality time with his wife and children, indulging in his love of reading, and supporting Pittsburgh sports teams.
