How to Stay Active During the Winter Months

Winter in New Jersey can be a challenging time to stay active as cold temperatures, blustery winds, and snow can make it difficult to get outside. However, staying active is essential for physical and mental health, so it’s important to find ways to make sure you keep moving even when the temperatures drop. Plus, with back-to-back holidays, engaging in winter activities can be a great way to spend time with loved ones. With safety in mind, here are some tips to help you stay active during the winter months.

Find an Indoor Activity

Being outdoors in the winter is not always an option, so explore your local gym or recreation center for indoor activities like walking on a treadmill or taking a fitness class. Group classes and one-on-one sessions can be a great way to stay motivated and hold yourself accountable.

Dress Appropriately

If you do decide to venture outdoors, make sure you are properly dressed in layers so that you can add or remove clothing as needed. Investing in breathable, waterproof gear can help keep out the cold and wind.

Take Advantage of the Holidays

One of the best ways to stay active during winter is to take advantage of all the holiday-related events! Winter is full of family-friendly activities such as sledding, ice skating, snowshoeing and more. You can also find local 5K or 10K races that are great opportunities for you and your loved ones to engage in outdoor exercise.

Stay Hydrated

Make sure to stay hydrated, even during the winter months! While dehydration can be more difficult to recognize in colder weather, it can still lead to fatigue and make it harder to stay active. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and have a water bottle handy when you are exercising.

Take a Walk After Meals

One of the easiest ways to stay active is to take a stroll after meals. This low-intensity activity can help you digest your food and get some fresh air. Aim for 20 minutes or more, depending on how much time you have available. This is especially helpful for post-holiday meals when we tend to overindulge. After dinner, grab a friend or family member and go for a walk β€” it’s good for the mind, body, and soul!

Increase Your Daily Movement

If you don’t have time to get in a full workout during the holidays, try to find ways in your daily routine to increase your movement. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from the store when you’re running errands and try to stand whenever possible. Every little bit helps!
