A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a bony bump on the side of a toe joint caused by bone malalignment. You may see a bunion at the part of the joint where the toe meets the foot, called the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. About the MIS Procedure
Minimally invasive bunion surgery is an alternative to traditional surgery that reduces post-surgical scarring, swelling, pain and offers a faster recovery. The bunion is typically corrected by creating small 2-3mm size poke hole incisions along the metatarsal and then re-aligning the bone with screws. Generally, people who have MIS will be allowed to walk the day of surgery. The surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and patients are often discharged in under 3 hours.
In comparison, during traditional bunion surgery, the skin is opened up on the top of the foot by a 4-6 in incision, causing increased scarring and limiting the mobility of the foot. Post- operatively, the patient must be non- weight bearing and may not return to regular footwear for 8-12 weeks.
